Deserving Dental is a non-profit Deserving Dental is nonprofit in Colorado that helps bring free dental care to homeless shelters, nursing homes, children/teens, and many more! They used to have pack 1,000+ lbs of dental equipment in and out of a van but thankfully they reached out to us and we provided a solution for them.  We were able to take a Ford E-Series shuttle bus and re-model the interior to be mobile dental hygiene clinic. We installed tool boxes that they use as storage, a sink, a dental chair, and even a little desk for them to complete paperwork.  Here are some interior photos: With many people lacking the access to dental care, we are aiming to remove the barrier of transportation and cost, making dental care more accessible. We put a ton of thought, effort, and dedication into this build. Our mission at Davey Coach is to Connect People to Whats Important, and we believe that this custom bus does just that.  We took into account all types of issues that the Deserving Dental team could run into. This is why we made sure they are able to use all necessary dental tools and machines within the shuttle bus. They have the option to plug into a building for power, but when that isnt available, we made a custom generator system for them to use. This development will provide a sizeable increase to the dealership's overall capacities, adding 9,000 square feet of building space and 2.5 additional acres to the Davey Coach headquarters, which currently sits on a 5-acre parcel approximately 3.5 miles northwest of the town of Sedalia in Douglas County. "It addresses multiple needs for our company as well as a need for more space to serve our customers. When you're a new entrant, you'll need to undergo a safety audit so that the DOT can determine that you have an adequate safety plan in place. Safety audits are also important for providing ongoing educational and technical guidance to motor carriers. Typically, these audits happen at the motor carrier's principal place of business. They can be performed by a safety investigator from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA) or your state's enforcement officer. During the safety audit, the investigator will review the systems you have in place to protect your drivers, your passengers, and your vehicles. This includes: The qualifications and duty statuses for your drivers Your vehicle maintenance policy The motor carrier accident register you've established Whether or not you have a controlled substance and alcohol testing policy in place Sometimes, new entrants don't pass the safety audit. In 1987, regulations were enacted to require tour buses to undergo inspections every 45 days. So, what's involved in a 45 day inspection? In addition to routine maintenance, tour buses must be inspected every 45 days by a qualified inspector. The inspection will include, but not be limited to, the following: Brake adjustment Brake system components and leaks Steering and suspension systems Tires and wheels Any defects noted during the 45 day inspection must be corrected before the tour bus is allowed back out on the highway. Records of these inspections are to be maintained at the place where the tour bus is regularly garaged or the operator's maintenance facility for at least one year. Upon request, these records must be made available for inspection by any authorized employee of the Department of Motor Vehicles. These records must contain, but not be limited to: The vehicle's make, model, license number, and other forms of identification The date and nature of every inspection or repair performed The company's vehicle number The signature of the operator's authorized representative affirming that the inspection and necessary repairs have been completed. If the records are kept electronically, that will suffice, as long as they have all the required information. Any tour bus that's been non-operational for 45 days or longer is exempt from the requirement of the 45 day inspection. In addition to these inspections, drivers are required to keep a daily inspection report, detailed post-trip, at the end of each driving day. This report must identify the vehicle and list any problems with it, either discovered by or reported to the driver. It's important to keep a record of these things, because they could impact the safe operation of the vehicle or cause a mechanical breakdown. The motor carrier must maintain these daily reports for at least three months, along with certifying that necessary repairs have been completed for any listed defect or deficiency. Necessary repairs must be completed before the driver operates the vehicle again. It's a little larger than a toaster – easily carried by one person – and located underneath the rear of the car in easy reach, just ahead of the tailpipe. And it's filled with valuable metals. Data scientists from the background-check firm BeenVerifiedTM found 14,433 reports of stolen catalytic converters in 2020. In just the first five months of 2021, they found 25,969. In 2019, they found reports of just 3,389 catalytic converter thefts. This is a 766% increase from 2019, and we are barely into 3Q. Thefts were most common in California, Texas, Washington, Minnesota, and Colorado. Connecticut, Colorado and Arizona saw the biggest spike in thefts. How are they stolen?  Working generally at night when it more difficult to catch on camera or be seen, they are cut out from a vehicle in less than 2 minutes. This is a pretty exciting addition to our organization, as well as our customers along the front range area, and we wanted to show some of the biggest and most popular requested services , as far as what this thing can do for us in the field. Generally speaking, it's things that the mechanic that's changing your oil or rotating your tires every 3 months may not know how to do. These are specialty services. So, for example, we can send this thing out to your yard, your community, or your location and do a DOT inspection on site for you. This is something that's required annually, if you don't get it done, it is up to $35,000 in fines. Granted, you'd have to have a lot of flagrant offenses, but at minimum, the vehicle is going to get put off the road and it's going to cost you a lot more than it would to just have us come out and do it for you, annually (which is what you're supposed to be doing, and again, that's on anything with a weight rating of over 10,000 lbs, which is almost every bus on the road and everything we sell). We get a lot of calls for this for jump starts and no-starts. Believe it or not, it's at least half the price (if not more) versus the price of a tow truck. So if you have a tow truck that comes out, picks up your vehicle because it won't start and brings it somewhere and all they've got to do is charge the batteries or give it a jump, it's going to save you guys hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Wheelchair lift service is also something that we get a lot of requests for. A/C systems – we've got snow on the ground right now, but if you want to keep your bus cold inside when it starts warming up, have our truck come out before you guys crank that air conditioning system on the first time. How Does Section 179 Benefit You? In the past, when you made a purchase of equipment used in your business, you expensed a portion of the investment over time through depreciation. As a working example, if you made a purchase of $100,000, in the past you would have written off $20,000 per year assuming a five-year useful life. Most businesses would instead prefer to write off the entire amount spent in the year it was purchased, and that's exactly what Section 179 does – it allows your business to write off the entire purchase price of qualifying equipment for the current tax year. Some are looking to start a mobile business such as a spa bus or create mobile office so they can work anywhere. Others are looking for a bus to convert into an RV or a home. The problem? Those buses don't really exist en masse. Sure, you can find the one-off here or there, but most reputable dealers won't stock and sell cheap buses because they pose a liability and risk, not only for the dealership, but also for the customer. Here are 6 reasons why cheap isn't the best option: Safety. Cheap buses may have been compromised in some way. There may have been an accident or damage that has caused issues with structural integrity. When you purchase a cheap bus from a private seller, you generally purchase it "as-is" which limits the seller's liability if something should go wrong. Service Issues. At Davey Coach, we only sell buses that meet our quality expectations. Used buses may require maintenance and repairs specific to the location it comes from. That means you need to have a schedule of regular service in place for your bus, covering maintenance and other service items such as oil changes, tire rotation, brake service, engine maintenance, and parts replacement when necessary. Your bus owner's manual contains the manufacturer's recommended maintenance intervals for basic maintenance of your bus and should be followed closely. Your bus engine oil is the life blood of the engine and should be changed on a regular basis to minimize engine wear and tear. How often you change the oil will depend on how the vehicle is used. If short, stop-start city travel is the norm, you should change the oil more often; if longer, inter-city journeys and/or freeway use is the norm, you can extend oil change intervals. For both gas and diesel engines, using a good quality, manufacturer's recommended oil should allow you to easily go 6,000 miles between changes. To keep your bus operating at optimum efficiency and power during the cold and snow that lay ahead, it's time to start thinking about winterizing your bus. This is a pretty easy undertaking which entails just checking a handful of items to ensure cold weather problems won't plague you this winter. Check coolant strength and condition Check battery Check windshield wipers Check tire condition Test heater Coolant Checking your coolant's/antifreeze's strength and condition involves using a Coolant Tester. These are fairly inexpensive and easy to use. This is typically done by removing the pressure cap (not when the vehicle is running or when it is hot) and drawing out a little liquid with the tester. The tester will indicate if you need to add additional coolant. In most climates, a 50/50 solution is recommended for year-round use. If the weather turns extremely cold, you can add a little more antifreeze to the system. However, never exceed a 70/30 mixture of antifreeze to water as it can cause the engine to overheat more rapidly. Battery Fully charged automotive batteries should measure 12.6 volts or above. With the engine running, the measurement should be between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. If you don't have a multimeter, you can test the vehicle's electrical system by starting it and turning on the headlights. If the headlights are dim, that means the lights are being run off the battery with little to no charge produced by the alternator. If they get brighter when the engine revs, the alternator is producing some current but not enough to charge the battery. If the lights emit normal brightness and don't change intensity with the engine revved, the charging system is okay. Windshield Wipers If you live in a climate that gets rain and/or snow during the winter months, check your wipers to make sure they are in good condition with no cracks. There is nothing more unsafe when driving than when visibility is distorted due to bad wipers. Tires Make sure you have plenty of tread on your tires, there are no gouges or cracks in the rubber, and they are at least all-weather tires. Investing in snow tires, if you operate in an environment that sees a lot of snow, is highly advisable. Heater You probably haven't used the heater in some time. Turn it on, blow any dust or debris that accumulated, and make sure it's blowing warm/hot air. If you are not getting any heat, that may be indicative of another problem that should be checked out by a mechanic. In addition to adhering to the regular maintenance schedule, these checks will help you keep your bus running strong and safe all winter long. The decision to lease or buy depends largely on the purpose of getting one. There are a number of reasons to justify leasing as a better option than purchasing a vehicle. It is a viable option for companies not ready to expand their current fleet, since it saves them time and money. There are some companies that need vehicles seasonally and buying a new one seems like a bad deal, whereas bus leasing sounds like a wiser alternative. Here are seven reasons why a company should consider leasing rather than purchasing a bus. Newer Models for Lower Price: In cases when you don't actually want to expand your fleet but new vehicles are required, the best option may be to lease a bus since you can get the latest models easily without paying as much as the owner did. Companies can afford newer models and bigger buses when they lease one rather than purchasing it. There is another catch here since the automakers that sell these buses typically have high residual value. The dealers look forward to high residual value, once the lease expires on the bus, they can offer expensive vehicles for not much more per month than any other old or smaller bus. 1. Less or No Down Payment: You may need to save on the initial down payment. A lease is a form of financing, it's not a loan. Generally, a down payment is used to lower the monthly payments but with a bus lease a down payment actually exposes you to greater risks and lost opportunity cost. Paying for a down payment on a leased car means you will never recover that money. What if, the vehicle is wrecked or stolen in the first month, and if your down payment was $5,000 then that means you have just paid $5,000 for a one-month lease. Hence, there is no down payment on leased vehicles. Making that big amount of down payment on a new vehicle doesn't even make sense since bus leasing sounds like a better option financially. When you lease a bus you walk out with the keys of the vehicle in hand without having to pay hefty monthly bills, and all at 'zero-down.' Some leasing options do include a small amount of down payment with a higher mileage allowance or damage forgiveness. Nevertheless, with zero down payments, going for a bus lease is a much better option than purchasing. 2. Monthly lease payments are lower than loan payments: Paying a monthly lease amount is much lower than paying out a monthly loan because you're paying for the vehicle's depreciation during the life of the lease. When buying a new bus, you must pay for the entire vehicle – including taxes, permits, interest charges and any other fees. 3. Tax benefits to lease a bus: When you lease a vehicle you simply pay taxes on your monthly payment instead if you buy the vehicle you would have to pay the entire amount of sales tax within 30 days of purchase. 4. No Maintenance Costs: When you lease a bus for three years, the vehicle has full warranty during the entire lease period. Lease agreements are shorter than vehicle warranties. If anything breaks down, you don't have to pay for the bus repair. Maintenance costs are fully covered with a bus lease. Even if maintenance is not covered, you can maintain the car which is why dealerships will check the car for signs of neglect and they usually purchase with a 'free maintenance' condition before signing the lease agreement. Although, if the wear and tear of the vehicle with tires or brakes wearing out, you have to spend some to replace these parts. Or you could opt for an extended warranty in order to avoid maintenance charges completely. 5. It's easy: Leasing is easier financially, much more convenient and faster than buying a car. When you want to get rid of the vehicle you can simply lease another one. You don't have to wait for the lease to expire to get another vehicle. 6. GAP protection: When you lease a bus and in case it gets stolen or damaged then you can benefit from the GAP protection that will not let you be on the hook for the difference between what is owing and what your insurance will pay out. 7. The smell of a new car: When you opt for leasing a vehicle, you can get a new one that has the smell of a new car inside. Turtle Top has designed and is currently building the first few prototype VT3 (Vanterra for those unfamiliar with the VT abbreviation) on the Ford Transit chassis. This vehicle will be available with a gas AND a diesel engine, which is exciting as we haven't had a diesel engine available on a Ford product for this size of vehicle since the 6.0L went away in 2009. We've seen some detailed rendition drawings, and while we aren't able to release any copies to the public just yet we can tell you it is a GORGEOUS vehicle that will change the transportation experience for both operators and customers alike. There will be options for up to 15 total passengers WITH dedicated luggage in the rear as well as an ADA option for those who need a bus with a wheelchair lift. The visibility in the passenger area is unlike anything that's ever been brought to market for the bus industry in this size/class of vehicle.
