Champion – UC Defender
Coming to the market for 2013 (Summer 2012 Introduction) will be the UC Defender built by Champion Bus Inc. on an International Chassis. Initial impressions show it to be a workhorse with a 19500 GVWR, Allison 5 speed Automatic Transmission, and the proven power of the MaxxForce 7 Diesel engine. The UC Defender will have a variety of lengths, wheelbases, and floor plans. It comes with the standard seating configuration of 18 forward facing seats plus 2 wheelchair positions in the rear, rear curb side Ricon lift, and no co-pilot seating.
Affordable, durable, and safe…what’s not to like? Well that depends on your location and application. First off this is not a highway coach. With the standard 4:88 rear axle and 2800 rpm governed speed look for a top speed of 68 mph. With a full load of passengers and at our altitude it looks more like about 55 MPH top speed. There are additional axle ratios available (4:30 & 4:33) which will help, but as always gaining speed = losing climbing power.
Overall it looks like a good city bus, airport or hotel shuttle, or para-transit unit, but if you are looking for a highway cruiser as a tour bus, college traveler, or charter service there are better chassis choices available.
